Falafel is one of the oldest and most beloved dishes in Mediterranean cuisine, and at Phoenician Garden, located at First and Herndon near St. Agnes Medical Center in Fresno, we've been making ours from scratch since 2003. Every batch starts the same way: dried chickpeas soaked overnight, then ground fresh with parsley, cilantro, onion, garlic, and a blend of spices that gives each piece its deep green center and golden-brown shell. We never use canned chickpeas or pre-made mix, because the texture and flavor are simply different when you start from the raw ingredient.

That difference shows up in every bite. When you order falafel in Fresno at Phoenician Garden, you get six pieces per plate, each one crispy on the outside and soft, herb-packed on the inside. The secret is in the soak: raw chickpeas absorb water overnight, which creates a drier, starchier base that fries up crunchier than anything made from canned or pre-cooked beans. Atmosphere is family friendly and also romantic. Food came out quick! You just can't ever go wrong here. The spicy hummus with pita bread, tabouli salad, and falafel is the best out there. The Phoenician veggie pizza is fantastic with or without the sauce, and that's all just the appetizers. The spicy chicken plate is so good that I can't get enough of it. My daughter enjoyed her chicken sharwarma so much but was full off of the appetizers, that now she has leftovers. But she wasn't the only one with leftovers. Then, to end your meal with a piece of baklava, which is my absolute favorite. It has the perfect amount of sweetness, and all of the nuts just make it the best dessert yet. You have to be out of your mind to not enjoy the food!!
