The Lamb-and-Beef Blend,
Sliced Fresh to Order
Gyro is a cornerstone of Mediterranean cuisine: a blend of seasoned meat, char-grilled in small batches until the edges crisp and char, then sliced fresh to order. At Phoenician Garden, located at First and Herndon near St. Agnes Medical Center in Fresno, we have been serving authentic gyro to our guests since 2003. It is one of the most beloved items on our menu, and it is easy to understand why when you taste it.
Our gyro starts with a classic blend of lamb and beef, hand-seasoned with Mediterranean spices that have been part of the Hmaidan family recipe for decades. The blend is char-grilled in small batches through the day, which gives our gyro its signature caramelized exterior. Every portion is sliced fresh to order. This is the only way to get that crispy, charred edge that makes gyro special.
Every gyro wrap comes served in warm lavash bread with our house-made tzatziki sauce, fresh tomatoes, onions, and crisp lettuce. A chicken gyro option is also available for those who prefer poultry. We also offer the gyro on warm pita as an à la carte option for lighter appetites. You can enjoy your gyro at our restaurant, order online for pickup, or get gyro delivery throughout Fresno and Clovis.
All of our meats are sourced from trusted suppliers, and prepared fresh every day. Whether you are a longtime fan of Mediterranean food or discovering gyro for the first time, our approach to char-grilling and fresh preparation makes a difference you can taste. That is why our gyro stays one of the top sellers on our full menu, with hundreds of guest reviews behind it. Curious how it compares to our shawarma? We break that down below.
Two char-grilled classics, one common question
People ask us this all the time. Both come off the same char-grill in small batches, sliced fresh, never off a spit. The difference is the meat and the sauce.
Gyro
- Meat: a lamb-and-beef blend (or chicken)
- Sauce: cool, house-made tzatziki (cucumber and yogurt)
- Taste: herby and bright, Greek-leaning
- Served: wrapped in warm lavash, or à la carte
Shawarma
- Meat: chicken or beef, marinated in our seven-spice
- Sauce: garlic toum, the whipped Lebanese one
- Taste: warm, spiced, deeply savory
- Served: as a plate, half-and-half, or a wrap
Still deciding? See the shawarma page, or just order one of each.

I can not say enough about this restaurant. The best food and deserts! I had the chicken kabobs, grilled veggies, tiramisu and it was delicious. The staff is friendly and atmosphere is nice. Easy to have conversation while eating- not noisy at all. Prompt service and big portions. Highly recommend.Cathy Skinner ★★★★★ Google
Gyro, Explained
What's the difference between a gyro and shawarma?
Both are char-grilled in small batches and sliced fresh to order, never off a spit. The gyro is a lamb-and-beef blend (chicken is also available) with cool house-made tzatziki. Our shawarma is chicken or beef marinated in our Lebanese seven-spice, served with garlic toum. Different meat, different sauce, same fresh-grilled approach.
Is your gyro made with lamb or beef?
Our classic gyro is a blend of both lamb and beef, hand-seasoned with Mediterranean spices. If you prefer poultry, the Chicken Gyros Wrap uses seasoned chicken instead. All of it is char-grilled in small batches and sliced fresh.
What sauce comes on the gyro?
House-made tzatziki, a cool cucumber-and-yogurt sauce we prepare fresh. It's wrapped right into the gyro with tomatoes, onions, and crisp lettuce. If you'd rather have our garlic toum, just ask.
Is the gyro gluten-free, and what about allergens?
The gyro is wrapped in lavash, which contains wheat, and the tzatziki contains dairy, so the wrap is not gluten-free or dairy-free. Our kitchen handles all major allergens, including sesame, and we can't guarantee any item is free from cross-contact. Tell your server about any allergy before ordering, or see our allergen guide.
